Author Spotlight on Elle Michaels

I had the wonderful opportunity to interview the lovely new author Elle Michaels. She gave me the arc for What Happens Tomorrow, which also happens to be her debut novel. I was blown away. It is such a beautifully emotional story. I look forward to see what else she has coming to us. I asked her a few questions and this is what she had to say..... 

KK Reviews: Who inspired you to start writing and publishing?

EM: I was at a signing in Seattle with AL Jackson and she asked if I was writing.  I of course laughed at the idea of me writing a book, even though I had always wanted to write screen plays. But, when I told her that if I was ever to write it would be about the dream... she told me to just go for it.  I will always be grateful to her for giving me a push.

KK Reviews:  How did you come up with this story line?

EM: The story line for What Happens Tomorrow was based on a bad dream I had one night.  One of those, what would I do if this happened to me. How would I move forward with my life? Would I be able to move forward.

KK Reviews: If What Happens Tomorrow were to become a movie, who would you cast to play the roles of Tyler, Brooke, Matt and Jenna?

EM: I have had my dream cast picked out since I started writing.  Brooke to me is Gennifer Goodwin. Tyler is none other than Chris Pine. Matt is Josh Duhamel. Jenna is Anna Kendrick.

KK Reviews:   What type of writing environment do you need? Some people need a quiet room or they listen to music or lay in bed. Which is it for you?

EM: Being that I am a night owl, most of my writing was done during the wee hours of the morning. I need peace and quiet for the most part, to really hear my characters. I would comfy myself up on the couch with my laptop and lots of coffee and write until two or three in the morning... then get up and go to work ;-)

KKReviews: I have to tell you, you made one heck of a debut with WHT so a big congratulations to you on that. What do you have planned for us readers in the near future?

EM: Awww, thank you so much. Brooke's story is very close to my heart. I have started to work on Jenna and Jasper's story, they're both fun characters, but I put that on hold for a new project I am working on. I wouldn't say near future, more like late 2015. Depending on how crazy life gets.

Brooke Adams is starting over. It has taken her four years to get to where she is at.  She knows her heart will never recover but she also knows she needs to get her life back on track. Cutting ties with anything or anyone that has to do with her past, she ends up in Santa Monica. . Her IT background has been helpful so she is able to work from home. She has made friends with her neighbor, Jenna who has become a sister to her and Tyler, who is her best friend and her go to guy for any manly jobs that she needs done. Their friendship is easy and comfortable, he has become her rock. There is potential there but she refuses to lose another thing in her life, she just wouldn’t survive it. As gorgeous as he is, she does her best to keep him in the friend zone. You know how life can be, not all things go according to plan.

“Tyler… I can’t lose you. You’re such an important part of my life that I…I…I know I would never recover if I lost you. I just really need us to take this slow.”

Tyler Reynolds was a goner the moment Brooke came into his life. He has kept his heart guarded after being cheated on by his fiancé a few years back. He thought he loved her and that she loved him but she ended up only loving his money. He cherishes his friendship with Brooke. He also sees the sorrow in her eyes, although she acts happy, he knows she isn’t and that she is hiding something. He wants nothing more than to make her happy. He would die before he causes her any pain. He goes for it with nothing more than a hope and a prayer.

As they explore their new relationship and come to terms with their feelings for each other, things seem to be headed in the right direction. Like all relationships there a few bumps in the road. E Mic

Elle Michaels has done a fantastic job. I could relate to this story. It was heartbreaking, I know what loss feels like and the emotions that come along with it, the daily struggles and believe me, and these are lasting feelings and struggles. It does get easier with time but I also think that life keeps you busy enough so you can’t dwell on that pain. Then the aspect of finding that all-consuming love, the fear of losing it. It is about facing your past, dealing with the fears, learning to live again and understanding that it is ok to move on.

Brooke is a fantastic character, fragile yet so strong. She is beautiful without knowing it. Tyler is just amazing, the patience he has, the love he wants to give and the protectiveness he feels for Brooke.

This book had me in tears but it also had me smiling. It is such a wonderful feel good story.

A week later we took our first trip into Seattle together. It was her idea. We rode in my car since she said she didn't have one. She looked nervous sitting in the front seat with her hands folded in her lap. When I asked her if she wanted me to put the radio on she said no. We ate Russian pastries from paper bags and watched the ferries cross the sound, shivering and standing as close as we could get to each other. Our fingers were so greasy when we were done we had to rinse them off in a water fountain. She laughed when I splashed water in her face. I could have written another ten thousand words just from hearing her laugh. We bought five pounds of prawns from the market and headed back to my house. I don’t know why the hell I asked for five pounds, but it sounded like a good idea at the time.

“You have one of these,” I said, as we were cleaning the prawns together at my kitchen sink. I ran my finger laterally along its body, pointing out the dark line that needed to be cleaned out. She frowned, looking down at the prawn she was holding.

“It’s called a mud vein.”

“A mud vein,” she repeated. “Doesn't sound like a compliment.”

“Maybe not to some people.”

She de-headed her shrimp with a flick of her knife and tossed it in the bowl.

“It’s your darkness that pulls me in. Your mud vein. But sometimes having a mud vein will kill you.”

She set down the knife and washed her hands, drying them on the back of her jeans.

“I have to go.”

“Sure,” I said. I didn't move until I heard the screen door slam. I wasn't upset that my words had run her off. She didn't like to be found out. But she’d be back.

My 4 Star Review

I loved that Aerie is a bit OCD. It made me really like her character. I love how strong she is but yet vulnerable at the same time.  Working in the business she works in and the connections she has along with her trust issues, she has built some pretty impenetrable walls around her life but especially her heart. Trust doesn’t come easy for her, especially when it comes to men, she learned that the hard way. When she meets Jagger, he changes it all for her and she finally lets her walls down.

Jagger Kennedy..... *sighs* Model, aspiring actor and HOT HOT HOT! He moved to L.A for a fresh start. The last thing he expected was Aerie. She isn’t like anyone he has ever met before and he can’t seem to get enough of her. He likes her not only for her wit and beauty but for her little quirks. 

Jagger is finally able to penetrate the walls Aerie has securely placed around her heart and Aerie is finally able to trust again, that is until Jagger past catches up with his present and the truth destroys what’s left of her heart and her trust. Like all relationships, the past puts a few bumps in the road  and Jagger finds himself fighting for the one he absolutely cannot live without. He isn’t giving up so easily and he will don anything and everything to prove to Aerie that he isn’t that guy.

The chemistry between Jagger and Aerie is INSANE. I love how he is able to read her and how comfortable she can be with him. Aerie learns a lot from him. She slowly starts to realize that he is what she needs.  He has brought out a side to her that she didn’t even know existed or at least a side she kept tightly sealed.  

A fantastic novella about learning to trust, letting go and fighting for someone you believe in.
